How to Use Redeeming Darwin

The Redeeming Darwin study materials were created to meet a critical need for equipping Christians and an exciting opportunity to engage non-believers.  Intelligent Design is a growing area of scientific research examining the expanding body of information on biological and cosmological complexity to determine if it contains evidence of an intelligent designer. The idea that science may demonstrate that an intelligent creator is a far more likely hypothesis than Darwin's theory of random changes coupled with natural selection does not sit well with those who preach evolution without God as dogma.  Consequently, the conflict between these two theories will continue to draw the attention of the news media and our popular culture.  From movies like Expelled, a documentary which exposes the shocking persecution of scientists and academics who dare to question Darwinist dogma, to debates on school textbooks and teaching standards, the level of public awareness and confusion is expected to increase.  This situation creates opportunities for Christians to discuss their faith and highlights the importance of equipping our teenagers and adults to understand how to take a stand for their faith. Redeeming Darwin provides an excellent set of materials to help you take advantage of this opportunity. The prevalence of naturalist Darwinism throughout secular society is a fundamental issue behind the deterioration of our society. Christians need to be equipped to address it. The evidence is on our side, so we can take the offensive if we are aware of the opportunities.

Redeeming Darwin is part of our Redeeming the Culture series.  Our intent is to address critical topics which push our culture and unaware believers away from a Biblical wordlview and to "redeem" those topics by equipping Christians to turn these topics into opportunities to share their faith in Jesus.   This article describes how to use this exciting material to strengthen believers in their faith and equip them to better proclaim Christ in their lives.

Step 1: Understand the tremendous opportunity the Intelligent Design vs. evolution controversy presents for strengthening the faith of your group and engaging non-Christians in meaningful discussions about Jesus. Make a commitment not to let this opportunity pass by because you were unprepared. Determine the best strategy for equipping everyone in your church or organization to respond to this equipping need and outreach opportunity. Select your preferred venue: small group study or large group seminar.

  • Small group study: The Leader’s Kit is ideal as a DVD-based small group curriculum. The Facilitator’s Guide provides everything needed for a person with little or no knowledge of intelligent design or evolutionary theory to lead a stimulating study with group discussion. The Reference Guide and the book, Creation, Evolution, and Modern Science, are excellent resources the facilitator can use to answer questions not directly addressed in the DVD  If your small group includes more than six people, you may want to consider purchasing additional copies of the Viewer's Guide with Reference Guide.  Alternatively, Viewer's Guides (without the Reference Guide) may be downloaded from our website..
  • Large group seminar: In a large group setting, each DVD can be played through continuously with each participant following along in their student guide. If desired, the DVD can be paused at the end of each small group session for questions. The leader may wish to break up the audience into smaller groups to review the discussion questions in the Facilitators Guide. You may want to purchase a Discovering the Designer DVD with Viewer’s Guide for each attendee so that they can share it with their friends.
  • Outreach event: Equip your group by going through the Redeeming Darwin study. Schedule a showing of Expelled or another movie on the subject (e.g. Unlocking the Mysteries of Life, The Privileged Planet) and invite your friends and neighbors to attend.  Offer follow up studies using the Redeeming Darwin material.

Step 2: Select the small group products you need.  Review the available materials (described at the end of this article).

  • Leader's Kit for leading small groups or as the starting materail for a large group session.
  • Self Study Kit for those wanting to undertake this study as an individual.
  • If you plan to distribute material for a large group, copies of the Discovering the Designer DVD with the Viewer's Guide with Reference Guide are available at a large volume discount.

Step 3: Review the description of the available outreach products and select the ones that fit the needs of your church or small group. Note: You may want to let small groups decide which outreach tools they want to purchase after they have reviewed the material and started their study sessions.

Step 4: Purchase the selected quantities from the Product page.

Redeeming Darwin: Declaring the Designer (DVD, approx. 45 minutes)

Declaring the Designer takes the information learned from Discovering the Designer and turns it into a natural tool for sharing the real truth about Jesus Christ with family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. It is hosted by R. Larry Moyer, President of Evantell and author of Free and Clear: Understanding and Communicating God’s Offer of Eternal Life. This DVD combines proven principles for sharing your faith with specific instruction of how to move from a discussion about the origins of life into a confident, clear presentation of the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. The intelligent design controversy creates an open door to discuss the question, “Where did we come from?” This DVD will help you and your small group to effectively use this wonderful opportunity.

 Redeeming Darwin: Student Guide

The Student Guide may be downloaded from our website at www.probe.org . This guide provides a framework for taking notes on the DVD content and group discussion. Sufficient detail is included to be a useful tool for the student in reviewing the session and interacting with others who have questions.

Redeeming Darwin: Viewer’s Guide with Reference Guide

The Viewer’s Guide combines an extended Discovering the Designer Student Guide with the complete Reference Guide in one convenient booklet. It can be used as is for participants in your small group study. Or, when combined with the Discovering the Designer DVD, it can be used as a handout for a seminar or outreach event.

Any discussion comparing and contrasting naturalistic evolution (Neo-Darwinsim) and intelligent design introduces terms and concepts unfamiliar to many people. The Reference Guide provides a concise description of many of these terms/concepts comparing the assertions of supporters of Neo-Darwinsim with those of intelligent design. It is small enough to slip into a Bible, purse or glove compartment, but comprehensive enough to respond to most questions that may be raised in a discussion with a friend or acquaintance.

 Who is God? (evangelism tract)

Your confidence and gentleness in discussing the intelligent design vs. evolution controversy have moved your conversation with a friend from discounting Christianity to seriously considering the claims of Christ. This tract is specifically designed to aid you in moving through a clear presentation of the gospel. It is also suitable to give to some one who is still asking questions but wants to know the significance of finding the answers.

Creation, Evolution, and Modern Science, edited by Dr. Ray Bohlin

This book contains short essays explaining many of the issues in the DVD series in greater detail yet is accessible to the lay reader. The chapters in Part 1 (The Many Faces of Evolution) and Part 2 (Intelligent Design) should be particularly helpful. This book can be used for further study of the scientific and biblical ideas discussed in Redeeming Darwin.
